Research area and mission
The general research question of this working programme revolves around the ways in which multiculturalism, globalization, hybridization and technological developments facilitate and constrain the social construction of meaning and management within and around organizations. In particular the research focuses on processes of sense-making and policy-making as shown by actors in and with regard to organizations.

Short history
Working Programme 8 (WP 8) started its activities as a new CERES working programme with the international conference “Shifting alliances and passing partnerships. Towards new forms of organizational identification”, in Utrecht, November 17 - 19, 2000. The conference received financial support of the Netherlands’ Research Organization (NWO) and was organized by a committee which consisted of CERES staff and researchers belonging to the founding groups of working programme 8, notably the department of Culture, Organization and Management (COM) of the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (VU) and the Utrecht School of Governance (USG) of Utrecht University.

Management
The management team is responsible for the daily management of the working programme. Currently the team consists of professor dr. Peter Leisink (UU-USG, chair), dr. Harry Wels (VU-COM, convenor) and Esher Zwart (PhD-student).
The management team agenda is determined by a number of objectives:
  1. monitoring and promoting the quality of research output,
  2. contributing to a socially and intellectually inspiring climate in the working programme,
  3. monitoring the supervision of (new) PhD-students and offering a platform for exchange of experience as well as a forum for presenting PhD-research,
  4. strengthening participation in international research networks and promoting the development of structural international cooperation between research groups.
 
Research clusters
This research program is based on the research of three academic centers:
  • ‘Management of Meaning’ chaired by professor Peter Leisink and professor Paul Verweel, Utrecht School of Governance, Utrecht University.
  • ‘Hybridization and Identification: New Forms of Organizational Identification in a Fragmented and Borderless World”, chaired by professor Heidi Dahles and professor Wim Koot, Department of Culture, Organization and Management, Vrije University Amsterdam.
  • ‘Social Transformation and Collective Remembering’ chaired by professor Ed Elbers and professor Robert Maier, Department of General Social Sciences (ASW), Utrecht University.
