&
Lisa Leimar Price, PhD

Eating and Healing: Traditional Food As Medicine is a global overview of wild and semi-domesticated foods and their use as medicine in traditional societies. Important cultural information, along with extensive case studies, provides a clear, authoritative look at the many neglected food sources still being used around the world today. This book bridges the scientific disciplines of medicine, food science, human ecology, and environmental sciences with their ethno-scientific counterparts of ethnobotany, ethnoecology, and ethnomedicine to provide a valuable multidisciplinary resource for education and instruction.

New ASC Web Dossier on "Conflict in Sudan: the case of Darfur"

The Library, Documentation and Information Department of the African Studies

Centre Leiden has compiled a web dossier on conflict in Sudan, and especially Darfur, to coincide with a workshop held at the ASC on 10 September 2004. The workshop brought together scholars involved in African Studies and journalists with a special interest in Africa in order to exchange ideas on information gathering and media coverage of African issues, in particular conflicts and war. The current crisis in Darfur was discussed as an example. The dossier aims to give background information on the Darfur crisis within the context of the wider conflict in Sudan. It contains a selection of titles from the ASC library's online catalogue on Darfur, the conflict in Sudan, and media coverage of conflicts in Africa in general, covering monographs as well as articles and chapters from edited works. The dossier further contains an introduction on the Darfur crisis and links to selected web resources. It can be found at our web dossier page, together with earlier dossiers on subjects such as African sport, HIV/AIDS in Africa and Youth in Africa: http://asc.leidenuniv.nl/library/webdossiers/

Amreeta Regmi (Ceres Working Programme 1):

‘Democratising Micro-hydel: Structures, Systems and Agents in Adaptive Technology in the Hills of Nepal’, 2004,Wageningen University Water Resource Series: Publisher: Orient Longman, India.

Hydel technology in Nepal is shaped by macro and micro power policy models. While the state-controlled grid system supplies energy nationally, micro-hydel have been romanticised and perceived as ‘community-oriented’ alternative system of rural electrification. The system has been designed with the premise that this is the ‘appropriate’ form of power supply, often overlooking the existing power bases and the ‘adaptive’ features of these hydraulic, transformative and evolutionary ensembles. Significant development of micro-hydel in Nepal has placed this technology in the forefront of these alternative forms of power supply. However, very little research has been done on the evolution of the micro-hydel sector or on the impact of this technology in the rural areas of Nepal. Out of the country’s total population of 22 million, only 1.1 million rural people have access to electricity, the majority of them through the ‘renewal energy’-based small capacity micro-hydel.

The series is hoping to present interesting work by Africanists in the Netherlands in the field of the social sciences. Other titles that are already in the pipeline include 'That Desert is Our Country' about Tuareg rebellions and nationalism in Mali, and a study about wildlife conservation in Zimbabwe. We would be pleased to hear from you if you are interested in submitting a manuscript for possible publication in this series.
